Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

on 20 Feb 2019

If you look at a computer's motherboard and see all the tiny circuits running all over it, you may end up wondering how they managed to design something so precise. EAGLE is an excellent answer to this question. This powerful piece of software enables engineers to design printed circuit boards (PCB) from scratch, using a large selection of flexible and easy-to-master tools. It comes with a vast array of special features, to help you design and simulate any electronic invention, verify that it respects all electronic rules, and much more.

EAGLE is a subscription-based product, but a free version is available as well, for non-commercial, educational purposes. Installing the software is not a difficult task, and it doesn't take long to complete the operation. There is no need to install any prerequisite tools or services, and you don't have to sacrifice too many resources to run the program.

You may need to spend some times with a few introduction videos and tutorials because EAGLE is quite complex. When launched, the program will greet you with a central control panel, on which you can manage your projects, models, scripts, libraries and more. You can also find links to new content on the developer's website, including video tutorials. The program provides you with different interfaces, for designing boards, creating basic schematics, managing libraries, writing scripts and so on.

The large number of controls can make the program seem a bit intimidating, but learning how everything works is surprisingly easy, and you will find that EAGLE can be an invaluable tool, especially when you discover all the advanced features it has to offer. For example, the schematic editor lets you drag and drop design blocks from one project to another, it can check your design to see if it complies to electronic rules, and it can even run SPICE simulations and validate your circuit's performance.

The PCB layout editor comes with its own unique features as well. Its built-in routing engine can help you optimize your circuits by finding the most efficient path from one point to another, align everything on the board and make sure your circuits don't run into any obstacles and interfere with other elements. You can make your circuit boards as complex as you need to without losing track of anything, thanks to the program's excellent layer support. You can design parts of your board on separate pages and overlay them into one design. The best part is that EAGLE's schematic editor is synched with the PCB layout editor, so any changes you make on one side will be made automatically on the other.

Regardless if you're an amateur or a professional, if you want to design printed circuit boards, EAGLE will make everything much easier, from start to finish.

Pros

The software can optimize your PCB designs. It lets you work on layers so that you can make your designs as complex as you want. It synchronizes your schematics with the layout editor to relieve you from more work.

Cons

You need some time to learn how everything works.
